The current conditions are an opportunity to attune ourselves with the greater reality of our existence. This being the undeniable truth that we are one.
As we witness the suffering of the entire world in the eyes of those children, we are being shaken to see how badly broken we are as a society; greatly in part because of the damaging “us vs them” rhetoric. I hope we use this opportunity to go inward to find clarity and our own humanity. To be touched so deeply that we recognize our individual responsibility as active participants in this process of unity. I pray we all soon realize that our own peace won’t come until the peace of all is assured.
In the midst of my feelings of powerlessness and frustration with the current injustices, I was reminded that although I can’t immediately stop the suffering of these families, there are many things we can all do to create the conditions necessary for this kind of crisis to not be relived again. And that gives me hope.
Do whatever you can. Reflect on where you are and the possibilities available to you and then act, in spite of the fear. Have the conversation. Make the connection. Give your time and resources. Care. Allow yourself to be a channel for love, change, and hope. All of our collective humble efforts will soon add up to transform these current conditions. A transformation that will occur from the bottom up. From your living-room, your classroom, your office, your community. We must all become protagonists in the process of transformation and unification.
Our foremost identity as human beings has been and will always be one; all else is secondary. We must eliminate the false notion of separation. This quest for unity will be messy, but we must remain committed to the vision. It’s time to put the differences aside and think as one people. Only through being and acting in unity can we ever hope to create a place where children aren’t separated from their families and every human is being treated with the dignity and nobility they rightfully deserve.
Please, don’t let this opportunity to tap into your true humanity and create better living conditions for the future of all pass you by.
In the words of Bahá’u’lláh: “Let your vision be word-embracing, rather than confined to your own self.” “Let deeds, not words, be your adorning.”
